Baby It's You - Smith 1969
"Baby It's You", by American rock band Smith, reached the #5 spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It features Gayle McCormick, an accomplished female blue-eyed soul belter, as lead vocals. Smith's version appeared on their debut album A Group Called Smith in 1969. The single was their first and most successful release. This version alters the traditional 1961 vocal arrangement as performed by The Shirelles in favor of a more belted, soulful vocal. The song was used in Quentin Tarantino's movie Death Proof. The group was discovered by 1960s singer/songwriter Del Shannon, in a nightclub in Los Angeles, who managed and produced the song even though none of the band members had ever heard of it before.

Still brings back bittersweet memories. It was 1967, I was 15, he was 18, and leaving for college. He wanted to marry me then and there, I got scared. We wrote almost daily, he called when he had the money or called collect. Oh how I hated hearing the operator interrupt, telling him to deposit another coin. I ended up breaking it off that winter. He even hitchhiked home to beg me not to. I was young and foolish, didn’t realize how he truly loved me. married, he asked me to leave my (then) husband and marry him, but I felt I had to stay in the marriage. Divorced, and married the second love of my life. I’m so very blessed to have had two men who truly love(d) me. My first husband not so much. You never forget your first love. 💛

Gosh, for years I thought I was hearing Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. It was actually four guys that did background vocals with Jan and Dean. They were supposed to be on the record but for some reason they never hooked up. Duane Eddy made this recording the best. BJ seems like a very nice guy. He's aged well and can still shatter glass with his high notes. He, Jay Black and Gary Brooker are some of the best.
